Yes, teachers typically provide opportunities for guidance during retreats. This may include group interviews or Q&A sessions early in the retreat, particularly for newcomers. If you are new to meditation retreats, we recommend starting with shorter options such as online retreats, daylongs, classes, or non-residential weekend retreats before attending a residential retreat.
Additionally, BCIMS periodically offers residential retreats specifically designed for newcomers. For updates, please subscribe to our Newsletter or check the Program Page on our website.

On most Vipassana or Insight Meditation retreats, participants take five ethical precepts:
Refrain from harming living beings
Refrain from taking what is not given
Refrain from sexual misconduct (celibacy is observed in retreat)
Refrain from false speech (most retreats maintain Noble Silence)
Refrain from intoxicants
Taking precepts allows everyone to contribute to an environment conducive to deepening one’s awareness and insight. It is a beautiful practice that allows oneself to avoid harm and mental disturbances- making space for positive qualities of mind.
